You will be met at your accommodation by your driver late morning. Travel through the fertile farmlands of the Canterbury plains, making your way into the shadows of the Southern Alps, with lunch at Terrace Downs resort (lunch can purchased at your own expense). Terrace Downs is a hidden gem with outstanding high country views. From Terrace Downs you are taken on a journey of discovery through Canterbury’s high country. Travelling through a number of small rural settlements, before travelling over Porters Pass and into the heart of the South Islands high country.

If time and weather permits, you will stop at Castle Hill to view the rock formations filmed in Narnia. From Castle Hill, follow the braided Waimakariri River to Arthur's Pass where you will reach a height of 739 metres. Travel through Arthur's Pass to the Otira Viaduct lookout, here you can marvel at this engineering masterpiece, that opened in 1999. Chances are high that you will also spot the cheeky New Zealand native parrot, “the Kea”. From Otira drive back to Arthur's Pass where you board the TranzAlpine train.

The train journey between Arthur's Pass and Springfield is the most scenic as the train clings and descends the cliffs following the aqua blue Waimakariri River. Travel through the high plans of Craigieburn, travelling through 15 short tunnels and over 4 dramatic viaducts, including the 72 metre high Staircase viaduct. So many photo opportunities as you travel east through the mountains. Once you arrive into Springfield, you have successfully crossed the main divide, disembark and your driver will meet you at station for your journey back to Christchurch, through a number of rural service towns.

On arrival into Christchurch you will be returned to your CBD hotel as your tour concludes you can reflect on the sensory overload.
