TOUR TYPE - INDEPENDENT TOUR

Independent Tours are not escorted group tours - they are for independent travellers. What this means is that it is not the same group of people travelling on their own coach with a tour leader/escort looking after you. You are travelling independently. However, you are picked up and dropped off at your accommodation each morning and evening and interesting commentary is provided on many sectors.

Day By Day Itinerary

DAY 1 - CHRISTCHURCH / MT COOK / QUEENSTOWN

Travel south following the foothills of the Southern Alps to Mount Cook Village via Lakes Tekapo and Pukaki. Enjoy a delicious lunch at Hermitage Hotel along with some free time to enjoy the spectacular surroundings before continuing on to Queenstown travelling via the Lindis Pass and the Kawarau Gorge.

DAY 2 - QUEENSTOWN / DUNEDIN

This morning travel through the Central Otago hill country to the city of Dunedin. This afternoon you may like to include an Otago Peninsula Tour. (optional extra) Cruise the length of the harbour and watch as fur seals swim and play, view ocean birds including albatross and enjoy a guided tour of Penguin Place. Please ask about this option.

DAY 3 - DUNEDIN / TE ANAU

Free time this morning in Dunedin which boasts some beautiful architecture – a quiet stroll around the city can be most rewarding. In the afternoon journey through the lush pastures of Otago and Southland to the lakeside resort of Te Anau.

DAY 4 - TE ANAU / MILFORD SOUND / QUEENSTOWN

A full day tour to the World Heritage listed, Fiordland National Park. Enjoy cruising Milford Sound and viewing the spectacular waterfalls and towering Mitre Peak before heading to Queenstown arriving in the evening.

DAY 5 - QUEENSTOWN AT LEISURE

A free day for you to enjoy this fabulous resort. There are dozens of activities available from jet boating, Lord of the Rings sites, relaxing wine tours. Something for everyone. Please ask for about additional activities.

DAY 6 - QUEENSTOWN / FOX GLACIER

Leaving Queenstown, travel to the West Coast passing via the Haast Pass into Westland National Park.

DAY 7 - FOX GLACIER / LAKE MATHESON / FRANZ JOSEF

Today visit beautifully reflective Lake Matheson. Offering unparalleled views of Fox Glacier, Mount Tasman and Aoraki/Mt Cook, Lake Matheson is the most photographed lake in New Zealand. Winding through ancient native rainforest, the walkway has three viewing platforms along the journey, providing unprecedented views. The full circuit around the lake takes approximately 1 – 1 ½ hours. Later travel a little further north to Franz Josef Glacier.

DAY 8 - FRANZ JOSEF / PUNAKAIKI / NELSON

Travel north through the Westland National Park to Greymouth and on to Punakaiki. Time to visit the Pancake Rocks and Blowholes before your journey continues north through Westport and the Buller Gorge to Nelson.

DAY 9 - NELSON AT LEISURE

“Sunny” Nelson is a lovey city facing the Tasman Bay. It’s known for its local arts and crafts stores and art galleries. It’s also a popular base for nearby vineyards and has a vibrant cafe scene. Perhaps go further out of Nelson and visit the beautiful Abel Tasman National Park. Please ask if you would like us to include this option in your tour package.

DAY 10 - NELSON / KAIKOURA

Travel through the Nelson state forests to Blenheim before heading south to the seaside resort of Kaikoura. Enjoy spectacular views of the Kaikoura coastline and the seaward Kaikoura mountain range. This afternoon is at leisure in Kaikoura.

DAY 11 - KAIKOURA / CHRISTCHURCH

This morning there is time for an optional whale watching cruise. Marvel at the giant Sperm Whale and the Dusky Dolphin or if you prefer, a gentle stroll along the coastline or a look around the quaint wee shops.  This afternoon relax on board the Coastal Pacific train* as you take in the beautiful scenery during your journey back to Christchurch.
