Day 1: Christchurch - Franz Josef
Leaving Christchurch city on The TranzAlpine Train, we cross the Canterbury Plains and into the Arthur's Pass National Park. From Arthur's Pass our journey is via an 8.5 km long rail tunnel that has been cut through the heart of the Southern Alps. Once on the West Coast we follow a narrow coastal strip of beech forest with spectacular mountain back drop south to the glaciers.
Accommodation: Bella Vista Motel, Scenic Hotel Franz Josef Glacier or similar.
Day 2: Full Day at Franz Josef Glacier
Today we have included a short sightseeing tour. You will be taken by shuttle bus to the Franz Josef Glacier viewing point. Visitors can view the glacier after a short 10 minute walk (this walk is not guided). Pick up time can be arranged with your driver.
Option: Upgrade to a 'Glacier Heli Hike' - a thrilling flight and an amazing three hour guided glacier hike. Please ask at time of booking.

Day 3: Franz Josef - Queenstown
We travel deeper into South Westland taking in the spectacle of Haast Pass, carved by the Haast River and framed by the Southern Alps. Take in the views of many beautiful lakes including Wanaka, Hawea, Dunstan and Wakatipu before arriving into Queenstown.
Accommodation: Bella Vista Motel, Scenic Suites or similar.
Day 4: Queenstown
A full day for you to enjoy this fabulous resort - we have included the Skyline Gondola in your tour. There are dozens of optional activities as well including: thrilling jetboating on the rivers, white water rafting, helicopter rides, sky diving,  AJ Hackett's world famous bungy jumping, cruises on the lake and spectacular walking trails.The list is endless with something for everyone. Please ask at time of booking if you would like us to book any additional activities.

Day 5: Queenstown - Milford - Te Anau
A full day tour to the World Heritage listed, Fiordland National Park - a truly spectacular region of snow capped mountains, glacier lakes, fiords, waterfalls and dense forest. From Te Anau, travel to the forested Eglington Valley, Mirror Lakes, Homer Tunnel and Chasm before arriving into Milford Sound. Enjoy a one and a half hour cruise of Milford Sound viewing the spectacular waterfalls and Mitre Peak.

Day 6: Te Anau - Dunedin
High country tussock soon gives way to the lush pastures of Southland and Otago as you travel through Gore and Balclutha arriving in Dunedin early afternoon.  Afternoon at leisure in Dunedin.  We recommend if you wish to take a trip out onto the peninsular to view the wildlife that you pre-book this or arrange something as soon as you arrive in at your accommodation.

Day 7: Dunedin - Christchurch
Morning at leisure in Dunedin for you to explore some of the many sights. In the afternoon travel north through the undulating hill country of Otago through the cities of Oamaru and Timaru. Leaving Timaru we enter the patchwork of the Canterbury Plains, the largest plain in New Zealand arriving in the "Garden City" of Christchurch.

 Independent tours are not escorted group tours - they are for independent travellers. What this means is that it is not the same group of people travelling on their own coach with a tour leader/escort looking after you. You are travelling independently. However, you are picked up and dropped off at your accommodation each morning and evening and interesting commentary is provided on many sectors.

Cancellation policy

If after your booking has been confirmed you wish to cancel, the following cancellation fees will apply:

  • For cancellations up to 7 days prior to travel – loss of deposit.
  • For cancellations 7 days – 48 hours prior to travel – 50% of total fare will apply.
  • For cancellations within 48 hours prior to travel – 100% of total fare will apply.

All tours may be amended provided these arrangements are made more than 15 days prior to departure. Amendments will incur a fee of NZ$50.00 per file change. Amendments within 15 days of departure will also incur additional fees in accordance with the policies of our suppliers.

Conditions of travel:

Pacific Travel reserves the right to alter fares, amend itineraries, book alternative accommodation or to cancel tours. Pacific Travel shall not be held responsible for any loss or damage to luggage or personal effects and/or damage resulting in death or personal injury which might arise whilst on tour with Pacific Travel or its nominated suppliers.
