New Zealand's highest peak - Aoraki / Mt Cook now comes into view, raising to a cloud piercing 3,724 metres. Upon reaching Mt Cook Village, there is time for lunch (own cost) or take one of the many short alpine walks in the area. Your tour continues south to the pretty village of Omarama for an afternoon tea break (own cost), then it's through the arid landscape of Lindis Pass and the historic gold mining region of Kawarau Gorge before reaching Queenstown - New Zealand's four season lake and alpine resort.

Day 2 Full Day Excursion to Milford Sound
Today you will experience one of the world's greatest natural wonders - the Fiordland National Park - a world heritage park. A vast remote wilderness with snow capped mountains, glacial lakes and valleys, fiords, islands, waterfalls and dense forests. Travel to Te Anau and on to the forested Eglinton Valley, through the Homer Tunnel and out into breathtaking Milford Sound. Day 4 Queenstown - Franz Josef Glacier
Leaving Queenstown, travel through the fruit growing area of Cromwell and past the beautiful lakes of Wanaka and Hawea. Climb over New Zealand's southern most pass - the Haast Pass that traverses the Southern Alps linking the East Coast with the West Coast. Soon after arriving in Franz Josef, you will be collected by Glacier Valley Eco Tours and transferred to the glacier carpark where you can take any one of the number of short walks available to see the glacier (this walk is not guided and return time can be arranged with your driver).

Option: Spend an extra day at the glaciers to experience a half day guided walk onto the glacier or to enjoy some of the many bush walks.
Accommodation: Bella Vista Motel, Scenic Hotel Franz Josef Glacier or similar.
Day 5 Franz Josef - Christchurch
This morning, you travel north through lush rainforests and spectacular scenery to Greymouth where we transfer onto the famous TranzAlpine Train. A remarkable journey of little more than four hours from the West Coast to the East Coast including the beautiful rainforests of the Arthur's Pass National Park. Pass through the Southern Alps via the Otira Tunnel, cross massive viaducts over the Waimakariri Gorge descending to the fertile farmlands of the Canterbury Plains and on to the "Garden City" of Christchurch.

Frequently Asked Questions about our Independent Tours

We just got back from our trip to Australia / New Zealand. I'm writing to let you know that we had a fabulous time on the New Zealand Southern Island tour. Everything went off without a hitch and you did a great job in making sure all the tours and connections were handled.
Thanks! A.M

We are now back at Christchurch, we leave early in the morning. On behalf of my family, I thank you very much for this awesome tour you prepared for us, the excellent organisation and all the efforts you made for us. It was an unforgettable journey.
Best wishes, E Papazissis & family

I travelled in New Zealand from Oct 10 till Nov 4. I booked two Scenic Pacific tours. One was on the North Island from Auckland to Wellington and stayed overnight in Rotorua and Taupo. The second started in Christchurch and went along the highlights on the South Island. A beautiful tour visiting Franz Josef Glacier, Queenstown and Milford Sound. From collection at my hotel, the bus drivers, the bus, the hotels everything was well organised. Superb. Special was the Maori night at Rotorua and the Milford Sound tour. Special thanks to Jodee for everything she arranged.
Kindest regards, H. van Loon
