37 kms from Oamaru lay the Moeraki Boulders. Take a stroll down the steps to the beach where you will see a scattering of large, spherical boulders consisting of mud, fine silt and clay. Originally the boulders began to form on the sea floor around 60 million years ago. It is estimated the larger boulders may have taken between 4 – 5.5 million years to get to their current size. Eventually they will crumble as they open up due to erosion.
This is a fantastic place for early morning for late afternoon photography.
