Located 5km off shore from the lower West Coast of the North Island is Kapiti Island. The mostly New Zealand Crowne owned land is considered one of New Zealand’s most important sites for bird recovery. This island is home to many native birds including Takahe, Brown Teal, North Island Kokako, North Island Saddleback, Tomtit, Fantail, Morepork, Weka and the North Island Robin. Brown Kiwi and Little Spotted Kiwi were released on the island and is now a strong hold for the Little Spotted Kiwi. Due to the close proximity to Wellington, day tours can be taken out to the island which are particularly popular with bird-watchers.
