Day By Day Itinerary
DAY 1 - QUEENSTOWN / GLACIERS
Travel to Cromwell and on through the Southern Lakes district to the Haast Pass. Continue north through dense rainforest broken by rugged coastal vistas, towards the glaciers. This afternoon we have included a shuttle transfer to the glacier. From here you can take a self-guided walk to view the glacier in the distance. (Please note: there is no ice time. Please ask at time of booking to add an additional day if you would like to walk on the glacier).
Stay: Franz Josef or Fox Glacier
DAY 2 - GLACIERS / GREYMOUTH / CHRISTCHURCH
Travel north through lush rainforests and spectacular scenery to Greymouth where we transfer onto the TranzAlpine train. A remarkable journey of little more than four hours from the West Coast to the East Coast travelling through the Arthur’s Pass National Park. Pass through the Southern Alps via the Otira Tunnel, cross massive viaducts over the Waimakariri Gorge descending to the fertile farmlands of the Canterbury Plains and on to the Garden City of Christchurch.
DAY 3 - CHRISTCHURCH / MT COOK
Travel south, then west across the Canterbury Plains to the foothills of the Southern Alps. We pass through the rural towns of Geraldine and Fairlie before arriving at Lake Tekapo, the first of two glacial lakes we will see today. Time is available to see the Church of the Good Shepherd and to have a brief stop in the village before leaving for Mount Cook. Try an optional scenic flight to view the glaciers and Mount Cook. At Pukaki, we leave the main road and follow the shore of Lake Pukaki, past Glentanner High Country Station to the alpine resort of Mount Cook, nestled amongst the majestic Southern Alps. This afternoon is free at leisure to visit the Mount Cook National Park Headquarters and learn about the interesting flora and fauna of the National Park and to find out about the numerous activities that are available in this region.
Stay: Mt Cook
DAY 4 - MT COOK / QUEENSTOWN
Time is available this morning to take part in any number of optional activities available – please ask for more information (additional cost). This afternoon board your coach bound for Queenstown.
