Day By Day Itinerary
DAY 1 - CHRISTCHURCH / KAIKOURA
Board the Coastal Pacific train* for your journey north to the seaside resort of Kaikoura. See rolling farmland, the beautiful Kaikoura coastline and the rugged Kaikoura mountain range. This afternoon enjoy a 3 hour cruise with Kaikoura Whale Watch to marvel at the giant sperm whale and the dusky dolphin. Kaikoura Whale Watch has won many international awards for tourism excellence and marine conservation.
* Travel may be by coach if the Coastal Pacific train is not operating
DAY 2 - KAIKOURA / NELSON
Travel north following the rugged Kaikoura coastline through to Blenheim, the centre for the Marlborough wine industry. The remainder of the journey is through undulating hill country and the Nelson State forests, arriving in Nelson mid afternoon.
DAY 3 - NELSON AT LEISURE
“Sunny” Nelson is a lovey city facing the Tasman Bay. It’s known for its local arts and crafts stores and art galleries. It’s also a popular base for nearby vineyards and has a vibrant cafe scene. Perhaps go further out of Nelson and visit the beautiful Abel Tasman National Park. Please ask if you would like us to include this option in your tour package.
DAY 4 - NELSON / PUNAKAIKI / FOX GLACIER
Today we travel south following the rugged coastline through the Paparoa National Park to Punakaiki. There is a brief opportunity to view the Pancake Rocks and Blowholes before continuing your journey to Greymouth, the largest town on the West Coast. Our journey south to Fox Glacier is through magnificent rainforest with the snow-capped Southern Alps on one side and the Tasman Sea on the other.
Stay: Fox Glacier
DAY 5 - FOX GLACIER / VISIT LAKE MATHESON
Today visit beautifully reflective Lake Matheson. Offering unparalleled views of Fox Glacier, Mount Tasman and Aoraki/Mt Cook, Lake Matheson is the most photographed lake in New Zealand. Winding through ancient native rainforest, the walkway has three viewing platforms along the journey, providing unprecedented views. The full circuit around the lake takes approximately 1 – 1 ½ hours.
Stay: Fox Glacier
DAY 6 - FOX GLACIER / QUEENSTOWN
Dense rainforests and the abode of the rare and graceful Kotuku (White Heron) contrast with rugged coastal vistas as we travel deeper into South Westland. The Haast River guides us inland over the Gates of Haast to the holiday resort of Wanaka before reaching Queenstown late afternoon.
DAY 7 - QUEENSTOWN AT LEISURE
A free day for you to enjoy this fabulous resort town. There are dozens of activities from white water rafting, jetboating, sky diving, bungy jumping, lake cruises and excellent walking trails. Something for everyone. We are happy to include additional activities in your tour package.
DAY 8 - QUEENSTOWN / MILFORD SOUND / TE ANAU
Travel to the Fiordland National Park – a world heritage park. A vast remote wilderness of snow-capped mountains, glacial lakes and valleys, fiords, waterfalls and dense rainforests. From Te Anau, travel to the forested Eglinton Valley, Mirror Lakes, Homer Tunnel and Chasm before arriving at Milford Sound. Enjoy a one and a half hour cruise of Milford Sound viewing the spectacular waterfalls and famous Mitre Peak.
Stay: Te Anau
DAY 9 - TE ANAU / DUNEDIN
High country tussock soon gives way to the lush pastures of Southland and Otago as you travel through Gore and Balclutha arriving in Dunedin early afternoon. This afternoon is at leisure in Dunedin. This is a great opportunity to visit the Otago Peninsula getting up close to some of the special wildlife found in this area. Please ask about this option.
