TOUR TYPE - INDEPENDENT TOUR
Independent Tours are not escorted group tours - they are for independent travellers. What this means is that it is not the same group of people travelling on their own coach with a tour leader/escort looking after you. You are travelling independently. However, you are picked up and dropped off at your accommodation each morning and evening and interesting commentary is provided on many sectors.
Day By Day Itinerary
DAY 1 - CHRISTCHURCH / KAIKOURA
Board the Coastal Pacific train* for your journey North to the seaside resort of Kaikoura. See rolling farmland, the beautiful Kaikoura coastline and the rugged Kaikoura mountain range. On arrival into Kaikoura join a 3 hour cruise with Kaikoura Whalewatch to marvel at the giant sperm whale and the dusky dolphin. Kaikoura Whalewatch has won many international awards for tourism excellence and marine conservation. Afternoon at leisure to explore Kaikoura.
* Travel may be by coach if the Coastal Pacific train is not operating
DAY 2 - KAIKOURA / BLENHEIM
This morning travel north to Blenheim. There is time to store your luggage at your accommodation before joining an afternoon wine tour. Your wine tour will be organised at your pace with your choice of wineries to visit. There is no stop for lunch on this tour, but cafe food is available at some locations (own expense). Finish with a visit to the Makana Boutique Chocolate Factory.
DAY 3 - BLENHEIM / NELSON
Enjoy this morning at leisure in Blenheim. You may like to visit the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre (own expense – 5 minute taxi from centre of town). Human stories from the Great War come to life in a theatrical treatment, which is innovative and visually stunning with sponsorship from Weta Workshops. This afternoon board your northbound coach for Nelson.
DAY 4 - NELSON WINE TOUR
Today enjoy a ‘Twin Regions Wine Tour’. You will explore the Waimea Plains region with its alluvial, free draining, gravelled soil, and the softly rolling Moutere Hills where gravel threaded clay, provides a contrasting growing medium for Nelson wines. Sampling boutique nelson wines from four different wineries, this will tempt the most discerning wine lover. This tour will allow you to take in over 100km of pristine scenery as you travel between the wineries. This is an informative fun afternoon where you will learn to taste wines like a professional. With experienced and friendly guides you are bound to have an enjoyable afternoon. All wine tasting costs are included. A leisurely lunch stop will be made where you can purchase meals if required (own expense).
DAY 5 - NELSON / GREYMOUTH / CHRISTCHURCH
This morning you will enjoy a memorable journey through the Buller Gorge, Westport and the beautiful Paparoa National Park to Greymouth. Upon arrival, join the TranzAlpine Train bound for Christchurch via the lush rain forest of Arthur’s Pass National Park. Travel over viaducts, through tunnels and cross the Canterbury Plains reaching the “Garden City” of Christchurch.
