TOUR TYPE - INDEPENDENT TOUR
Independent Tours are not escorted group tours - they are for independent travellers. What this means is that it is not the same group of people travelling on their own coach with a tour leader/escort looking after you. You are travelling independently. However, you are picked up and dropped off at your accommodation each morning and evening and interesting commentary is provided on many sectors.
Day By Day Itinerary
DAY 1 - CHRISTCHURCH / / GREYMOUTH / HOKITIKA
Board the world famous TranzAlpine train at Christchurch Railway Station. Sit back relax as you take in the vistas of the Canterbury plains, crossing viaducts and travelling through many tunnels, before traversing the majestic Southern Alps. Travel through the Otira tunnel before arriving on New Zealand's West Coast. You will be met by your driver at Greymouth who will take you south along the shores of the Tasman Sea to Hokitika. Here, enjoy the stunning Treetop walk with vistas high above the canopy as well as an abundance of bird life. From here you will be taken to the World famous Hokitika Gorge, with its azure blue pools and later to your accommodation.
DAY 2 - HOKITIKA / PUNAKAIKI / GREYMOUTH / CHRISTCHURCH
You will be collected from your hotel this morning and travel north through Greymouth, travelling up the “Coast Road” - a spectacular coastal drive. Relax and enjoy the rugged coastline to Punakaiki. The Pancake Rocks that Punakaiki is famous for are 30 million year old limestone formations. Should the tide and the swell be in your favour the blowholes will display their full fury. Return to Greymouth along the “Coast Road” in time for your relaxing return journey on the TranzAlpine train back to Christchurch where your tour concludes.
