Day By Day Itinerary

DAY 1 - AUCKLAND / PAIHIA

Travel north via the Hibiscus Coast to the beautiful Bay of Islands. On arrival in the Bay of Islands visit the historic Waitangi Grounds, site of the historic treaty between Maori and European pioneers. View a magnificent Maori meeting house and a large war canoe then transfer to the Paihia waterfront to join a dolphin watching cruise to Cape Brett. Travel through the famous “Hole in the Rock” (weather permitting). A boxed picnic lunch is included.

DAY 2 - PAIHIA AT LEISURE

Today you have a day at leisure in the beautiful Bay of Islands. You may wish to explore the far north on a day tour to Cape Reinga to see where the Pacific Ocean collides with the Tasman Sea and travel along Ninety Mile Beach or a short ferry ride to historic township of Russell (additional cost). Or, simply relax and take in the scenery around Paihia.

Stay: Paihia

DAY 3 - PAIHIA / ROTORUA

Leaving Paihia this morning you travel south back to Auckland before your journey continues over the Bombay Hills to Rotorua – NZ’s Maori cultural capital.

Stay: Rotorua

DAY 4 - ROTORUA SIGHTSEEING

Gain an insight into New Zealand’s Māori culture at Te Puia, then experience Rotorua’s famous geothermal activity with a tour of the neighbouring Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley – a place where mud pools bubble and boil and geysers shoot steam high into the air. You’ll also see Te Puia’s woodcarving and weaving schools and see how these ancient Māori art forms are being passed on to a new generation of master artists.

Then see our agricultural industry in action at the Agrodome, a working organic farm where you can find out all about farming life in New Zealand, watch a sheep shearing display and see sheep dog trials where the hard-working farm dogs show off their amazing skills.

New Zealand’s wildlife and natural scenery is on display at Rainbow Springs Nature Park, where you can get up close to all kinds of native flora and fauna including the famous kiwi, a flightless native bird. Wander through native forest and discover New Zealand birds, fish and lizards (including the ancient tuatara), as well as exotic animals from around the world.

This afternoon is at leisure for your own activities or additional sightseeing.

Stay: Rotorua

* Travel may be by coach if the Coastal Pacific train is not operating

DAY 5 - ROTORUA / WAITOMO / AUCKLAND

Leaving the geothermal wonderland of Rotorua in the morning, travel through lush farmland into the King Country region. After arriving in the small town of Waitomo, you’ll be taken on a 45-minute guided tour through the world famous Glowworm Caves, which were discovered in 1887 and are now one of New Zealand’s most popular tourist destinations. Wander through subterranean caverns and learn how the stalagmites, stalactites and other spectacular limestone rock formations were formed over millions of years. You will travel through the Glowworm Grotto on a magical boat ride, surrounded by the twinkling lights of thousa

nds of glowworms. A wonderful treat before heading back to Auckland where you arrive mid afternoon.
