Day By Day Itinerary

DAY 1 - WELCOME TO AUCKLAND

Welcome to Auckland, New Zealand’s City of Sails. Flights can arrive any time prior to 4.00pm; you will be transferred from the airport to your hotel. After you check-in, you can explore Auckland. Take a walk down Queen Street, to the main shopping precinct or take a bus (leaves from outside the hotel) down to the Viaduct Harbour and the Auckland Waterfront region. This recently developed area of central Auckland has cafes and restaurants galore. Take a seat in the sunshine, enjoy a glass of one of New Zealand’s famous Sauvignon Blancs and watch the maritime activity on Waitemata Harbour. This evening, meet your fellow travelling companions and your AAT Kings Travel Director at a welcome reception back at your hotel.

DAY 2 - AUCKLAND / BAY OF ISLANDS

Depart Auckland and travel along the Hibiscus Coast to the Bay of Islands. Take a scenic cruise through game fishing waters to Cape Brett and, weather permitting, through the ‘Hole in the Rock’. The return cruise to Paihia meanders through picturesque islands with deserted sandy beaches and secluded bays. Keep your eyes peeled for the marine life.

DAY 3 - BAY OF ISLANDS

Today is a completely free day for you to experience the beauty of the Bay of Islands. Perhaps take a coach trip up to Cape Reinga - the very top of New Zealand via idyllic Ninety Mile Beach. Experience a day of sailing aboard a historic tall ship, enjoy wine tasting on a wine tour of the region, or join a tour of Russell and learn more about the settling of the Bay of Islands. Tonight, you are free to dine as you wish. Your Travel Director will assist you in booking all of your optional experiences.

DAY 4 - BAY OF ISLANDS / AUCKLAND

Enjoy a leisurely morning before travelling through lush farmlands on your way back to Auckland.

DAY 5 - AUCKLAND / ROTORUA

A city sights tour will start your morning in Auckland. Travel around the waterfront from central city out to Mission Bay. Prepare your camera for the stop at Bastion Point and the Michael Joseph Savage Memorial, as you will get stunning shots of Auckland, the North Shore and the Waitemata Harbour. After leaving Auckland you will follow the meandering trail of the Waikato River to Waitomo Caves. Tour the amazing limestone caverns and sail through the still waters of the sparkling Glow Worm Grotto. From Waitomo to Rotorua you will venture through the King Country region which was at the centre of the New Zealand Wars in the 1860s. On arrival in Rotorua an orientation tour takes in views of Lake Rotorua. Tonight, an evening of culture, history and scrumptious food awaits you at the Tamaki Family Marae. Wander through the ancient forest village and learn about Maori art forms and traditions, followed by a concert featuring local performers. Experience an authentic Maori Hangi meal, steamed underground in the traditional way

DAY 6 - ROTORUA

Your morning is free. You might like to visit Rainbow Springs Nature Park for a glimpse of New Zealand’s iconic kiwi bird, or Te Puia, the Māori Arts and Crafts Institute. Experience the multi-awardingwinning Agrodome Farm Show, for insights into agriculture in New Zealand. This evening, enjoy a Māori Hangi feast Highlight Dinner and concert at the Tamaki Māori Village.

DAY 7 - ROTORUA / WELLINGTON

Journey through tall pine forests and verdant farmland to spectacular Huka Falls and serene Lake Taupo. Drive along the shores of New Zealand’s biggest lake through the alpine scenery of Mt. Ruapehu, Tongariro National Park and the dairy farms of Manawatu. Then follow the Kapiti Coast to Wellington for a city orientation tour.

DAY 8 - WELLINGTON / PICTON

After a city sights tour of Wellington taking in New Zealand’s parliament buildings, and a visit to Te Papa, the Museum of New Zealand, enjoy some time at leisure. Indulge in Wellington’s renowned coffee culture or take a walk along Lambton Quay - the heart of the central business district of Wellington. You’ll have lunch included today provided by ‘Eat My Lunch’. ‘Eat My Lunch’ is a charity organisation that provides lunch for New Zealand school children who otherwise would be going to school without. By having lunch today, you are giving a lunch to a child in need. This afternoon, your crew and coach will join you on board the Interislander for a cruise across the Cook Strait, from the North Island to the South. Surprisingly it takes longer to cruise up the Tory Channel and Queen Charlotte Sound to Picton than it does to cross the open ocean of Cook Strait. You will meander through a maze of arms and inlets into the sleepy seaside village of Picton. Tonight, enjoy dinner at your hotel.

DAY 9 - PICTON / CHRISTCHURCH

Travel to Kaikoura, where sperm whales can often be seen not far from shore (an optional whale-watching flight is available). Travel along the Pacific Ocean coast and across the colourful Canterbury Plains to Christchurch.

DAY 10 - CHRISTCHURCH / OMARAMA

Explore Christchurch at leisure this morning, then travel over the fertile Canterbury Plains to serene Lakes Pukaki and Tekapo. Next, view the Church of the Good Shepherd and soak up the scenery of Mt. Cook National Park (an optional scenic flight is available).

DAY 11 - OMARAMA / DUNEDIN

Visit the Waitaki Hydro Power Scheme and the monumental spillway of the nearby Benmore Dam. Then travel to the town of Oamaru, with its celebrated white limestone buildings. Continue to Dunedin, New Zealand’s southernmost city. The afternoon is free for you to explore. Perhaps take a wildlife cruise or ride the historic Taieri Gorge Railway.

DAY 12 - DUNEDIN / TE ANAU

Enjoy free time in Dunedin. You might like to visit Larnach Castle. Then travel across the fertile sheep-dotted pastures of South Otago en route to Te Anau. Tonight, you may choose an optional experience and visit the Te Anau Glowworm Caves.

DAY 13 - TE ANAU / QUEENSTOWN

Your experience in magnificent Milford Sound today is sure to be one of the highlights of your journey. Travel first through the tall native rainforests and rugged mountains of Fiordland National Park, then cruise the serene waters of this natural wonder. On the way to Queenstown see Mirror Lake, Cleddau Valley, the Chasm, Mitre Peak and Bowen Falls, then travel along the Devil’s Staircase and the shores of Lake Wakatipu. Enjoy an informative orientation tour of the city before settling in for your two-night stay.

DAY 14 - QUEENSTOWN

Explore New Zealand’s adventure capital at your own pace today. Later in the afternoon, cruise across Lake Wakatipu aboard TSS Earnslaw to Walter Peak High Country Farm for a gourmet barbecue Highlight Dinner and an entertaining after-dinner farm show.

DAY 15 - QUEENSTOWN / FRANZ JOSEF

The first stop is historic Arrowtown. Next is Cromwell to taste its sensational stone fruit. Then it’s a trio of lakes – Lake Dunstan, Hawea, Wanaka before you travel through Haast Pass, view Thunder Creek Falls and take a rainforest walk. Your final destination today is the extraordinary Franz Josef Glacier (an optional scenic flight is available).

DAY 16 - FRANZ JOSEF / CHRISTCHURCH

You’ll visit Hokitika, home of the native greenstone (jade), for a factory visit and jewellery demonstration first up then travel to Arthur’s Pass to board the TranzAlpine, one of the top 6 train journeys in the world. This spectacular journey takes you through the Southern Alps and across the Canterbury Plains to Christchurch. This evening celebrate your holiday at a farewell dinner with your Travel Director and new-found friends.
