This was not part of our initial itinerary but when we had a free afternoon while in Rotorua we decided to splurge and go for this tour.

We went on the last tour which leaves around 1 pm from downtown Rotorua, you get on a comfy bus that takes you to a town called Matamata and you arrive at the movie set about an hr later. You really do feel like you have arrived in Middle Earth as you enter the sprawling movie set with 44 hobbit houses and showcases New Zealand’s natural beauty at its best.

I didn’t give it 5 stars only because there was a tour ahead of us and behind us ….that kind of forces you to stop and go as your tour guide directs you rather than having the leisure to explore this wonderland at your own pace.

I’m not a die hard Lord of the Rings fan and my teenage daughter has never seen the movie but we were both mesmerized with the landscape and all the details of this movie set. This tour was totally worth the splurge and you are back in Rotorua around 5 pm.
We did the Hobbiton Movie Set tour from Rotorua. We joined the bus on Fenton Street from the Hobbiton shop.

It was a pleasant one hour drive to Hobbiton after which we met our tour guide, Mira. It was her last week working at Hobbiton and she gave us a lovely tour round, showing us all the points of interest and giving us some good stories. We were the third tour in the morning and I would think it is better to get there early as Hobbiton looked quite empty and authentic as there were not many tours already started.

We didn’t feel rushed but of course you are on a time scale as the next tour is waiting to start but at no time did I feel I missed anything. We ended with a drink at the Green Dragon and it was a really nice cider, you had choice of 2 beers, cider and a ginger beer.

I loved the tour! If you have seen the films, read the books or heard anything about MiddleEarth it really is a must.
