We took the boutique tour today with Gavin. It was a perfect day! He is very knowledgeable about the region, the wines produced here and in the rest of NZ, and about wine in general. He also has great relationships with the folks at the wineries which made for a more personable experience 🙂 I highly suggest you take one of Appellation’s tours!
We did the boutique half day wine tour in the middle of Winter which takes you around 4 local wineries.

We stopped at Mt Rosa for a tasting, the host their was very friendly and knowledgeable and we got to try a large selection of their wines from a variety of years to compare variations. This was definitely my favorite stop.

We then stopped at Carrick for a platter lunch and here we had a glass of wine of our choice to accompany our meal. The food was locally sourced and all very fresh.

Our third stop was at Domain Road, a smaller winery with a tasting room which had beautiful views across the vines.

Finally we stopped at Gibbston Valley, this is not normally a stop on the boutique tour but was requested by one of the other guests and was put on the schedule by the company for them. The host here was very knowledgeable and engaging and the cave was fun to taste the wine in. Overall i preferred the smaller vineyards to Gibbston but i liked that if any of us had a preference this was easily catered for by the team.

Our driver/guide Martin was lovely and was able to give information about all the wines we were tasting at the various stops and info about the local area.

It was a great day and a great way to see some of the smaller vineyards which we would not have normally gone to. The bus size was also good as it meant it was a more personalised experience at each of the stops and you wernt having to compete with a full coach load of tourists!
