Located some 260 kms north of Auckland, the Bay of Islands is a deeply indented bay containing some 150 islands on the east coast of the Northland Peninsula.
Our journey north is via the Harbour Bridge to the North Shore, a large residential area with many beautiful bays and inlets. The Hibiscus Coast is a popular holiday location and retirement resort with many fine beaches. Further north we travel through Whangarei, Northlands only city and largest port.
On arrival in the Bay of Islands we proceed straight to the Waitangi Treaty House, site of the historic treaty between the Maori and European pioneers. View a magnificent Maori meeting house and large war canoe. Boarding our ferry we travel across the 'Bay' to the township of Russell, the very beginning of European colonisation in New Zealand.
Arriving in Russell, we join Russell Mini Tours for a tour around this fascinating area with its early whaling and political history. Enjoy lunch ( optional at extra cost) and shopping along the waterfront before joining the ferry back to Paihia. In Paihia take time to explore the busier side of the bay with its shops and arcades. You may even see a big game fish being weighed in at the wharf before joining your coach for your return journey to Auckland.
