Day 1 Christchurch - Greymouth
Board the world renowned TranzAlpine train bound for Greymouth via the Arthur's Pass National Park. Cross the Canterbury Plains, travel over viaducts and through tunnels and into the lush rainforest of the West Coast. Arrive into Greymouth 12.45 pm and check into your motel. From 2.00 pm you will be collected by Kea West Coast Tours for a Punakaiki 'Wild Coast' Tour. This is their most popular daily departure and one of the jewels in the crown of New Zealand’s scenic treasure chest. Just getting there along the famous Coast Road is half the fun, with the magnificent coastal views, the wild birdlife and the cliffs and gorges. Take time at the renowned Punakaiki pancake rocks, a guided walk through the subtropical rainforest and time to explore an isolated beach while hearing about the ecology of the seabirds and plants from these ancient landscapes. Arrive back at your motel at 6.00 pm.

From 9.50 am this morning you will be once again collected by Kea West Coast Tours, this time for a journey back in time to the early gold mining township of Shantytown. The West Coast goldrush started in 1864 and continues today! What started as a trickle, turned into a flood as people from all over the world poured in to this isolated bush-clad wilderness. Tour includes entrance, gold panning and steam train ride - another bonanza! At 12.45 pm you will arrive at the train station to connect with the TranzAlpine back to Christchurch. The TranzAlpine is recognised as one of the top six train journeys in the world. Arrive Christchurch 6.05 pm.
